What is StrengthsFinder?
(aka CliftonStrengths)
There are 34 Themes (what they call strengths). Some with fun names (like Maximizer or Woo), some a little outside our everyday conversation (like arranger or intellection).
Some may not sound like strengths to you (like input or significance). And a handful seem to have universal appeal...we may have strengths envy if we don’t land ones like self-assurance and achiever.
If you take the Clifton StrengthsFinder Test, you’ll be give a shortlist of 5 Top Strengths. If you’ve got yours, share them in the video's replay comments. It’s always fascinating to see what everyone has!
FUN FACT: Morgan's recent StrengthsFinder Results were Strategic, Positivity, Input, Connectedness, and Learner.
Personal Growth Recipe from StrengthsFinder 2.0
The Personal Growth Recipe from StrengthsFinder that we ALL can use, whether we’ve taken the test or not is so simple. It takes TALENT multiplied by INVESTMENT to equal STRENGTH.
TALENT X INVESTMENT = STRENGTH
Talent: “a natural way of thinking, feeling, or behaving”
Investment: “time spent practicing, developing your skills, and building your knowledge base”
Strength: “the ability to consistently provide near-perfect performance”
So discover your Talents. If you haven’t taken this strengths test, that’s cool. Look into your memories, or get some help finding your strengths. You can take a Strengths Assessment for FREE Here. But find those talents, and then invest in them somehow.
Now if you DO have your Strengthsfinders results, let’s get real. Most of us struggle to remember the labels. (I actually re-took it today because I couldn’t find my old test, and my old results escaped my memory). Let’s just say - if we can’t even remember the names, how are we making our talents stronger?
3 Ways to Use your StrengthsFinder Results:
#1 — READ THE DEFINITION.
So often the Strength in the assessment doesn’t mean what we use the word for in everyday life! Most of us think we know what that means, but the definition of the strength measured by the assessment often is not what we think.
2. Find an Example from YOUR OWN LIFE when you displayed this strength.
If you ranked high in this strength, chances are you’ve been using it all your life, perhaps without even knowing it. So look for it. Once you see how this strength looks on you, you start to identify with it in a more useful way.
If you’re using some other assessment or list of strengths, you can do this same exercise. Documenting examples of your past use of strengths helps you take that forward and build on it in the present.
#3 — Brainstorm Ways to Use it!
If you’ve taken the test, or own the book, StrengthsFinder 2.0, you can read the definitions and “Ideas for Action” to give you ways to put it into practice.
I use the word “Brainstorm” because it’s good to come up with LOTS of ways to invest in your strength...without necessarily committing to doing all of them IMMEDIATELY. Sometimes if we over-commit to #AllTheWays to build our strengths we can exhaust ourselves.
Remember: Strengths training is like going to the gym. It WILL make you stronger and DOES expand your energy stores. But it will also STRETCH and STRAIN you in some ways. Like any good workout, plan room for this “investment” to be a positive part of your day, rather than unintentionally committing to doing too many of the brainstormed ideas all at once.
