If you ask me, leadership has become way harder than it needs to be. If it wasn’t hard, experts wouldn’t be getting paid to tell us how to lead. I think MANAGEMENT is difficult; if your LEADERSHIP is difficult – you are missing something!
When I think about keeping leadership simple, it has a lot less to do with what you are doing and more to do with how you are impacting the lives of those around you.
How to Start Your Day
Sometimes the only person you are leading is you- How are you impacting your own life? From the moment you start your day you are determining the success of your day – start with the first 15 minutes of your day.
Find something that works for you: sit up in bed smile and greet your day with gratitude. Guard your mind against all of the things competing for your attention first thing and focus on what you know will give you the day you want to have. Jump up and head to your first thing- maybe it is a spiritual practice, a workout, a time with your kids and know what is next.
Leadership is Simply Thriving Relationships
Keeping leadership simple when leading others is to realize that leadership is simply building and navigating a relationship with someone. A relationship that draws the best out of that person. Relationships are built on trust- what are you doing to build trust?
If you are a “people person,” invest in building that relationship. If you are not a people person still invest in relationships in a way that is authentic to you. If you are not a people person stop trying to become someone you’re not! Connect in ways that are genuine. People will connect with you and love you for being authentic.
Do like Frank Sinatra sang- “do it your way!”
The final way to keep leadership simple is becoming aware of your perspective. Leadership is perspective!
Leading For the First Time
When an event happens in your life good or bad – the way you approach opportunities or someone who is stuck – your perspective determines your effectiveness in solving that problem, building relationships, and drawing the best out of that person.
Your best perspective comes from being engaged in meaningful work. Get creative get innovative and find the meaning in your daily tasks and your work as a leader. If you are not engaged you won’t be creative and maintain a great perspective.
